Prints on Exhibition
The vibrant colour, skilful composition, sound draughtsmanship and distinctive style of artist Valerie Wright (1920-2008) feature in an exhibition at the Patonga Shopfront Window Gallery this month, until the 9th of September 2011.
A long time devotee of the paintings and drawings of Valerie Wright, the Patonga Bakehouse Gallery’s Jocelyn Maughan is delighted to present a series of limited edition prints of her works.
“Her rich tapestry of design and colour is always modified by a respect for the picture plane,” said Jocelyn of Wright’s work. “Whilst her inspiration may be life or fishermen, the real reason for Wright’s paintings is composition and design. - and all these are qualities evident in her paintings.”
Fellow artist Robin Norling, also an admirer of Wright’s work, believes her work “closely parallels that of her contemporaries – Rah Fizelle, Grace Crowley, Frank Hinder, Grace Crossington-Smith and Margaret Preston – and should rightly stand among them in Australia’s art pantheon”.
